When Bears Flyby Vince PoscenteAuthor of The Ant and the Elephant, Invinceable Principles and The Age of Speed The last time you were with these guys you were in a backcountry bar, Grant was on your shoulders about to make an odd decision. He reached down and grabbed the establishment's cherished possession: a 60 lb - chainsaw carved - bear. At the same time, Sean was on a pay phone trying to hear his "this is the one" girlfriend over the crowd when the entire place went silent. Grant lurched the bear over his head. Bad idea! It hit the ceiling. You stumbled back. This set the bear free from 10 feet up. All you saw was a shaped wood log nosedive past your line of sight. It slammed into the oak floor so violently it did its own version of "the worm". KER CLUNK...Ker Clunk......ker.... clunk. The rest of the story? Your imagination won't come close. But we belly laughed our way through tale last week in Phoenix. Our previous road trip was 25 years ago. Last month, Grant called to reunite "the boys" for a few days of golf. Together we regaled our University days. Stories from our twenties.
Why we let two and a half decades pass before we reconnected is a shame but it was a great mental break nonetheless. Better than a phone call. Better than a visit. Organizing a small reunion of friends that defined your youth is as healthy as it gets. You'll learn how time doesn't change people's persona, but it does augment their perspective. It's great therapy to skip all the surface stuff and get grounded. It's good to be humbled too. Out for some Mexican food and beers we felt like we were 21 again. We joked around like the old days. Even our 21 year-old waitress, Megan, was in on the fun. She sprightly announced, "You guys are great..." We grinned until she followed with five words, oft repeated on the links the next day, "...you'd like my dad's friends". As if a prized carved bear had hit the planks, time stood still. Megan walked off smiling AND clueless about her reality punch. "That hurt," uttered Sean in a meek tone. Sure you're not as young as you were but sparking memories with close friends invites youthful feelings. Laughter is bound to be a consistent sound. Catching up and connection from camaraderie is good for the soul. It colors the canvas called your life. Thanks to Grant, we experienced the gift of revisiting buddies who helped define who we are today. There's never a perfect time to do this, but there is a right time - it's now. Be a Grant, pick up the phone (not a carved bear) and make a mini-friendship reunion happen. You'll feel 21 again. That is - until Megan shows up. Until next week, it's full speed ahead,
