Grazie Zia Maria

by Vince Poscente

We lost a family treasure you didn't know. Zia Maria. Here's what the obituary had to say:

POSCENTE , Maria (nee Tognarini) August 15, 1918 - April 14, 2010 Maria Poscente of Calgary passed away on Wednesday, April 14, 2010 at the age of 91 years. Maria's kind and caring nature made her a friend to all who crossed her path. The aroma of home cooking and her warm and enthusiastic smile always greeted those who entered her home. Her Italian cuisine will be missed forevermore. Family and friends gathering together was so very important to her. Maria was a hard-working, gentle person. She immigrated to Canada from Italy in 1954. She always put others ahead of herself to ensure that they were well looked after. Besides her loving family, Easter and Christmas traditions were of utmost importance to her. She encouraged her entire family and friends to try to be together with her for these joyous occasions. Maria was employed by the Holy Cross Hospital for over twenty-seven years where she established many life-long friendships.

Maria had thick, Coke bottle glasses. When she blinked you were reminded of big, caring, Italian eyes.

After graduating, at 23, I got my first job and needed a place to stay until I found my own Calgary apartment. Zia Maria offered to take me in, "Butta maka sure you finda you owna place Vincenzo. You notta my boya friend." She's say with a wink of those adorable eyes.

Family, as dysfunctional as we make it out to be, is still the bedrock of our existence. Guaranteed, family will be on your mind with your last breath just as you were on their mind with your first breath.

Cherish your family and make time to spend time with them.

In the last couple of weeks I took my son Max to a hockey tournament in Phoenix with my brother and brother-in-law played. Besides the hockey, the cousins had some wonderful hang time. Then, Max and I camped and hiked the Grand Canyon for a few days. We take a trip every year together. We've done this since he was two years old. Each of my kids shares this same tradition. Sure it takes time, but life seems somewhat pointless without a rainbow of family memories.

Maria would have approved.

She knew that we can get caught up in our 24/7 lives full of challenges and change. Yet a brief moment, eyes closed, can be spent remembering the kitchen bursting with the aroma of fresh pasta and homemade tomato sauce. Holding your Dad's enormous, strong hand when the world was a safe place. Showing Mom a finger painting from school.

To all the Maria's of the world, we don't say thank you enough. Thank you for bringing family and friends together. Thank you for reminding us that the relationships we nurture will be our greatest reward in life.

Grazie Zia Maria!
